

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Lela Mae Gibson (nee Rice) and Cecil Gibson of Pineville, KY. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 41 years, Brenda “Rose” Gibson (nee Ledford), daughter Hope Gibson (David Jeanette), grandsons Sam and Henry Evans, step son Timothy Shane Fisher, brother David Gibson, sister Kathy Neti (Sudhakar), sister Cecilia Elliott (Glenn), nieces: Leela Diaz (David), Anita Lugo (Dan), Mallory and Madison Elliott, great nieces: Selah, Rodrigo, Madison and Eli.
Gary was a teacher and counselor in Jefferson County Public Elementary Schools for 28 years, 26 of those years were spent at Semple Elementary School where he was an alumni. Gary loved his students and co-workers and was well known for his sense of humor, kindness, outgoing nature, common sense teaching and love of children. Gary left an indelible impact on the lives of his students in preparing them for life outside of the classroom. Gary was well loved and respected throughout his community.
As an avid sports fan, Gary enjoyed watching sports of all kinds. Gary founded the Independent Sports Officials Agency, Inc. (ISOA), which operated in various counties in metro Louisville and Southern Indiana. Gary and those who worked with him refereed and umpired basketball, baseball, softball, football, volleyball and soccer. Through ISOA, Gary developed relationships with numerous referees and umpires, many of which became his close friends.
As a lifelong member of Southside Baptist Church (now Highview Southside), Gary was a devoted Christian, former Sunday School teacher and usher.
Visitation is Friday, January 3, 2025 at Evergreen Funeral Home and Cemetery in Louisville, KY from 4-8 pm and Saturday January 4, 2025 from 9-11 am. Funeral service is Saturday, January 4, 2024 at 11am at Evergreen Funeral Home and Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to Hosparus.
