Harry Palmer, Jr., died on Friday, May 24, 2024 at the age of 75, due to complications from Agent Orange, which laid dormant in his lungs since 1969 when he served with the 4th Infantry Division in Vietnam.
He is preceded in death by his dad, Harry Sr., the best mother in the world, Mary Catherine, and an older brother, Jim. Harry also had many loyal and close friends who over the past few years has already gone as well.
Harry is survived by the greatest wife of almost 40 years, Michelle, whom he loved very much and also two sisters, Susie Whitaker and Mary Darling Barnes. He did have a faithful goldfish!!! His pride and joy was his very loyal Border collie, Blake, whose unconditional love would melt anyone’s heart. He was blessed with many close friends and relatives, Greg, Mike, Danny, Bruce, Bill B, Paul F, Jim, Tom and their neighbors of over 10 years, Lisa and Will H. just to mention a few.
Although money issues forced Harry to quit school in the 12th grade, he was still able to attain many of his goals. He was drafted and served with the 4th Infantry Div. (USA) in 1969 at the age of 20. After getting injured he was able to receive his GED while in the hospital. Mr. Palmer received many awards and medals but, he was most proud of being able to serve his country and receive his Infantry badge. The next several years, Harry went through what he called “The Dark Ages” of his life. Survivors guilt (from Vietnam), a loveless booze filled marriage and years of unhappiness.
Harry eventually got his act together and in 1971, he got hired as a mail handler at the USPS. After a year as a mail handler, he switched over to the letter carrier craft, where he spent 33 more years. Harry was a Union Officer for over 30 years, going from Union Steward to Vice President for the National Association of Letter Carriers. As a union steward, Mr. Palmer won the very first Fred Herman award given to the best steward in the entire state of Kentucky. While working full time as a letter carrier. Harry received his Associates degree from University of Kentucky (J.C.C.) and also his Bachelors… UNION YES!!!
