John was a proud Kentuckian whose love for his home state ran deep. Few things brought him more joy than cheering on the University of Kentucky Wildcats. A devoted member of Big Blue Nation, he followed Kentucky basketball with passion and pride and loved sharing that excitement with those around him.
John retired from the United States Postal Service after many years of dedicated service. He also served as a former board member and Secretary/Treasurer of the Kentucky Rural Letter Carriers Association, where he advocated for and supported his fellow carriers.
From an early age, John lived by the values of service and leadership. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout, an achievement that reflected the character he carried throughout his life. He was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and Whitesburg High School, where he played football and formed friendships that lasted a lifetime. John was a member of Whitesburg First Baptist Church and had a deep love for travel and adventure, finding happiness in exploring new places and creating meaningful memories with those he loved.
Above all else, John was a devoted husband, father, and family man. He is survived by his wife, Sabrina Hayes; his cherished daughter, Whitney Shaver, and her husband, Austin Shaver, who were the center of his world. He is also survived by his parents, Susan Hayes and Haskew Hayes; his sister, Sarah Tandy, and her husband, Jon Tandy; and his nephew, Joshua Tandy. John shared a special bond with his nephews by marriage, Brad Donoho and Brian Donoho, whom he loved as sons.
John will be remembered for his warmth, his quiet sense of humor, and his steady presence. He was someone others could rely on—kind, thoughtful, and always willing to show up for the people he loved. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the family he cared for so deeply. He will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 22, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40218.
