More memories.. 2

We apply and received a fellowship to spend the summer at Los Alamos National Laboratory, working with the high pressure physics group. This was an eye opener as graduate students from throughout the country would come to spend the summer there. They had special student housing and we shared a studio apartment.

John enjoyed music and we shared interests. Though not my interest, John enjoyed shooting and he did take me a couple times. 

In the late 80's and early 90's, we would spend Christmas in Colorado with Diane's parents and always come down to Denver to. meet up with John and Dana.

A interesting memory, the CSU main frame had the original adventure game which we play while developing and running physics codes

I was sorry to learn of John's passing when Dana contacted me in March. She recalled we were close friends in the early 80's when we were both Physics students at Colorado State University. We kept in touch throughout the 80's and into the early 90's but lost touch after that. John was a private person and it was difficult to look him up.

We met in August 1981 as first year graduate students and started hanging out before fall classes started. Some memories from that time:

Early that fall, one of the Physics professors (John Raich) would like to take new students for a climb in the Rockies as an introduction to Colorado. Professor Raich was an avid mountaineer, having come from Austria. We first went up to his house in Estes Park to acclimate, then early in the morning we climbed a snow field then (I think is was) Mt. Elbert. It was great.

The university had a strong experiential learning program that allowed students to check out good camping and mountaineering gear. That winter, John and I got into our heads we would try snow camping. We drove up to Rocky Mountain National Park and started up the Long Lake trail. I don't recall if we were naive in checking the weather or a freak storm came in, but about half way up the trail, a storm came in. In our wisdom, we set up the tent, climbed into the bags and buckled down for the night. Next morning we packed up, hiked down to the car and went home. We were a little out of our league.

The four of us (John, Dana, myself, and my future wife Diane) took many trips up the Poudre canyon, especially to learn cross country skiing. Initially we had no clue what we were doing, but we chose easier trails and learned fast. A highlight was stopping for cinnamon rolls.
