She was born on August 30, 1929, in Ontonagon County, Michigan to Warren and Audrey Hea.
Karen was warm, kind, generous and let the love for her family shine above all else. Throughout the years, she showed that love by baking her famous cookies and pies, cooking delicious holiday meals and spending long afternoons teaching her children and grandchildren her favorite crafts. She was an especially talented quilter, and former member of the Oldham County Log Cabin Quilters. She will live on in the beautiful blankets and quilts she created, recipes passed down through generations and the smiles and hugs that anyone lucky enough to receive one will never forget. As she always reminded us- "Do everything you can while you're young."
Karen is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Donald G. Wenzel Sr., a daughter, Janice Audrey Wenzel Gruber, and a granddaughter, Elisabeth Grace Wenzel.
She is survived by her children: Joyce Jevnikar (Larry), Jill Shlonsky (Steve), Don Wenzel, Jr., Lisa Thompson (Dale), grandchildren: Samantha Lawrence (Joel), Sarah Vargo (Jonathan), Brian Shlonsky (Kristen Shanahan, fiancé), Lyn Wenzel (Tripp Brockway), Douglas Shlonsky (Grace), Warren Wenzel and great-grandchildren: Olivia, Brooklyn, Luke, Addison, Hadley, Alexa, Reagan, Aiden, Serena and Edith.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Parr's Springhurst, Legacy Lane Memory Care and Hosparus, for the kindness and care they gave Karen during the final years of her life.
A private memorial service will be held at Cave Hill Columbarium on January 22, 2022.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hosparus Health. Hosparus Health Development Office, 3532 Ephraim McDowell Dr. Louisville, KY 40205 or charity of choice.
