Leona Fern Hurst

Born on December 9, 1939, in Middlesboro, Kentucky, to the late Murphy and Beulah Rowlett.

Leona was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Larry Keith Hurst, Sr.; her grandson, Josh Carta; and her siblings, Nan Thompson and David Rowlett.

Her memory will be cherished by her children, Kelly Carta (Darryl) and Larry Keith Hurst Jr. (Kathy), her grandchildren, Shaun Carta, Ashley Hurst (Christy), and Lauren Shirrell (Ben), as well as her great-grandchildren, Braxton, Rowyn, Alivia, Emma, Sonny, and Nola. She is also lovingly remembered by her sisters, Betty DuPre, Diana Turner, Jenny Walston, Janis Hale, and Barbara Jane Brock.

She was a graduate of Middlesboro High School. Leona spent 25 years at General Electric where she retired. She was an avid gardener, her flowers and plants brought beauty to the world, while her fishing trips were legendary among family and friends. Leona's talents extended to sewing quilts and clothing for her children, preserving the fruits of her labor through canning, and engaging her mind with puzzles. She also found joy in the delights of bingo and the allure of gambling, with slot machines as her favorite pastime.

Leona's life will be cherished and celebrated by all who had the privilege to know her.

A visitation for Leona will be held Saturday, December 7, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40218, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM. Leona will be laid to rest privately within Resthaven Memorial Park.
