Mary Ellen Gimmel

Mary Ellen Gimmel (nee Lauyans) was born in Louisville, KY. She was the sixth of seven children of Frank and Elizabeth Lauyans.She loved school as a child and was a voracious reader her entire life. She dedicated her life to taking care of her family and loved her children and grandchildren deeply and was an accomplished homemaker. In the 50’s Mary Ellen was a telephone operator at Bell South, work she enjoyed and was proud of. In later decades Mary Ellen was a volunteer at Baptist East Hospital for over 40 years. She loved her friends and appreciated her community at the Forum at Brookside. The family is grateful for the care she received at the Forum and at the Nazareth Home in Clifton.

She is predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Dick Gimmel; and her daughter Susie Lage. Mary Ellen is survived by her children: Rich Gimmel (Angie), Rob Gimmel (Leslie), Kathy Henderson, Chuck Gimmel and Millie Gimmel (Paul Laudeman); and grandchildren: Dennis Lage (Amy), Leah Royse (Brian), Richie Gimmel (Christal), Emily Gimmel Mitchell (Jordan) and Magdalena Laudeman Gimmel. She has 11 great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2025 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road. A funeral service in Mary Ellen's honor will begin Friday morning at 10:00 AM. Mary Ellen will be laid to rest in Resthaven Memorial Park.
