

He was born in Campbell, Missouri on May 23,1928 in a home built by his father’s and uncle’s own hands. He grew up in Bernie, Missouri. Wayne was the youngest child of Cordie Marshall Wheatley and James Alexander Miller.
He married Betty G. Miller on August 6,1952 in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. They were married for fifty-two years and eleven months until her death in 2005 and were the parents of three children.
Wayne served as an airman in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in San Diego, California and was part of a CV-11 Composite Squadron working on aircraft carriers. He received training at the Naval Air Technology Training Center (NATTC) in Millington, Tennessee. After his service in the Navy, Wayne attended telegraph school where he learned Morse Code. He was a telegraph operator for the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad for thirty-six years before retiring in 1986. During his time at the railroad, computers replaced the telegraph machine, and Wayne smoothly made the transition learning the new technology. He also served as a BRAC (The Brotherhood of Railway and Steamship Clerks, Freight Handlers, Express, and Station Employees) steward. Upon his retirement, he and Betty moved to Florida. During his lifetime his hobbies were hunting and fishing. He was also an amateur darkroom photographer, and he owned and operated a fence company for a time. He was proud to be a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cordie and James; sisters: Avis Sudbury, Lillian Roseland, and Jimmie Faye Thompson; brothers: Clifford Miller, and Joe Miller.
Left to cherish his memory are his and Betty’s three children: Ramona Faye Miller of Frankfort; Carol Ann Wooten of Columbus, Ohio; and Joe Wayne Miller of Columbus, Ohio. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Aaron Wooten (Tess), Anson Wooten (Carrie), Natalie Stroupe, William G. Stroupe II, Dylan Miller, Kristin Bond, and Ryan Wilson; and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 12pm Saturday, January 25, 2025 at Evergreen Funeral Home with burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be 11am-12pm that Saturday at the funeral home.
