

Born on February 22, 1929, in Sedalia, Kentucky, to the late Carmen and Buenos Wilkins. Ruth's life was a tapestry woven with devotion to her family, her faith, and her community.
Ruth's early years were spent in the rolling hills of Kentucky before moving to Detroit, Michigan, where she graduated from Pershing High School in 1947. Ruth's career as a secretary at Jefferson County Public School spanned an impressive 25 years.
After her retirement, Ruth continued to embody the role of a caregiver and homemaker, a testament to her loving nature. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as tending to her garden, mastering the art of crochet and cross-stitch, and creating a warm and welcoming home for all who entered. Ruth's hands were rarely still, and the fruits of her labor were not only beautiful but also a symbol of her love and dedication. She was long-standing member of Beechmont Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. She was also a member of Victory Memorial where she met and then married her late husband Robert K. Sr.
Ruth's legacy is carried on by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert K. Sutherland Sr., her grandson Thomas May, and her sister Norma Shoemaker. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive by her children, Deborah Mann (David), Robert K. Sutherland Jr., Laurie Hayes (John), Valerie May (Rob), Kevin Sutherland, and Kerry Sutherland (William Sullivan). Her brother, Errol Wilkins (Rosie), will fondly remember the bond they shared.
Ruth's grandchildren, Meredith Mann, Bryan Sutherland (Caitlin), Rachel Fricke (Todd), Steven Hayes (Christina), Benjamin Hayes (April), Rob May, Annie May, Sarah Durand (Dave), and Scott May (Kristen), will miss her deeply. Her 13 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews, will grow up hearing stories of her loving, gentle, and kind nature.
Ruth's life was a testament to the power of love and the beauty of a life well-lived. She was the heart of her family, a friend to many, and a woman of great faith and compassion. Her influence will continue to be felt through the lives of those she touched.
A visitation for Ruth will be held Tuesday, August 20, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40218. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at 2:00 PM, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40218. A committal service will occur Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at 3:00 PM, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40218.
