Elizabeth A. Trauth (Mom, Hubba) July 04, 2022
Elizabeth and Sherman were young kids when they married more than 78 years ago. They had two children, RL Kentucky Trauth and Judy Trauth-Thomas. Their small family of four grew out of much larger families. Dad had eight brothers who preceded him in death (Ed, Clelland, Charles, Pete, George, Gilbert, Richard and Raymond). Mom had six brothers and sisters. Living are Jean (Louisville), Jerry (Oklahoma) and Don (Tennessee). Deceased are Bill, Marvin and Tom.
Sunday picnics, BBQs and celebrations brought together dozens of aunts, uncles and cousins. Ballgames in the “lot”, cards after dinner, Mom’s cooking and cooking kitchen group cleanups were the activities that we all looked forward to.
Mom was an avid reader, a collector of glass humming birds. She was a walker before it became fashionable. It was nothing for her to walk two miles to the library on Lummi Island, five miles to Walmart in Salem, Illinois or all around the Highlands in Louisville hand in hand with grandchildren, just walking and talking.
When asked to describe Mom (Hubba) these are the most reported: kind, caring, helpful, quiet, loving, gentle, beautiful and always ready for a good hug.
Mom’s beauty was a match for Dad’s good looks, who was given the nickname “ Shiek”by his older brothers, Dad being the 7th of nine brothers.
Dad (Papa) loved to fish the Ohio River on any pond or lake known to have fish. He also had a vast collection of tools, loved to tinker and there wasn’t a gadget he couldn’t fix.
A participant in many pool tournaments, his smooth pool stroke saved many league matches that often put winning dollars in his pocket.
Dad began his career as an electrician at Fawcett Dearing in Louisville, that later sold to World Color Press taking Mom and Dad to Salem, IL. He retired after 40 years of dedicated service.
Once retired Mom and Dad enjoyed many cross America road trips, visiting relatives and stopping at all of the yard sales. When they tired of traffic, speed and road repairs, they switched to the railroad for transportation for their westbound trips. The Empire Builder and other trains carried them from Salem, IL to Lummi Island, WA many times during their long happy retirement.
Our family is scattered over many states from CA, WA, MI, TN, FL, OK and MD. There are more than 22 grand to great grandchildren, with lots of stories to be told.
Elizabeth and Sherman were a love story with ups and downs, and a very happy ending. After over 78 years of marriage and Elizabeth’s passing in July 2022, Sherman returned home to Louisville, KY and spent his remaining days very close to his Louisville family.
I want to acknowledge and thank Deb and Dennis Roos and family for the care of my Dad while he lived at Morning Pointe. Dad lived there for eight months and enjoyed family visits every week, drives through the old neighborhoods, eating fish & chips and oysters at his favorite restaurants, while he and Dennis enjoyed weekly Westerns and Football games together. He loved in-person, telephone and FaceTime visits with grandchildren and hearing the details of their activities.
Thank you to Deb, Dennis, Lauren, Kyle, Devin, AJ, Matthew, Griffin, Cooper and Emma Rose.
He knew we loved him.
We knew he loved us.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.archLheadywestport.com for the Trauth family.
