He was a retired buyer, having worked for Louisville Grocery, Sysco, B&R Foods, and Pocahontas. He was an alumni of Bellarmine University, a Marine Corps veteran, and an avid golfer and UK fan.
Walter is survived by a daughter, Angela Gerst; step-son, Jerry Byers (Gail); a sister, Peggy Dillinger; grandchildren, Jeff, Tiffany, and Jason; 5 great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held jointly with his wife from 2-8 pm Tuesday at Heady-Hardy Funeral Home, 7710 Dixie Hwy. His funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 501 Cherrywood Rd, and a joint funeral service for him and his wife at 1:30 pm Wednesday at the funeral home, followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery.
