Donald was born in Louisville on June 7, 1940 to Hallie (Williams) and William Arthur Harper. He had 8 siblings and grew up on the Point. Donald's childhood stories included stealing candy, fighting and generally causing trouble. He began working at a young age, loved ground hog hunting, fishing, being with his friends and developed a life-long love of golf. He married Betty (Jacobs) Harper in 1961 and they had 3 daughters together: Donna Elizabeth, Melissa (Harper) Fannin and Amanda (Harper) Lanham. Donald worked for Brinly-Hardy most of his working life but was also a jack of all trades who loved helping his neighbors, friends and family. Despite his rough exterior, Donald was a generous, caring soul and a good friend. He would always help those in need, was always quick with a joke and added so much laughter to our lives. He will be greatly missed.
Donald is survived by daughters Melissa and Amanda, son in law Nathan Lanham, grandchildren Alex and Jennifer Harper, Darin “Ves” Schantz and his partner Nyx Spencer and stepson Thybalt, and Erin Fannin, as well as brothers Jack and David and their families and countless beloved extended family members. He joins his wife Betty, his parents, daughter Donna, siblings Charlotte, Florence, Clara, Mary Joyce, Nellie and James and many other family members for a heavenly reunion.
Visitation will be Monday, October 13 from 11-2 at Evergreen Funeral Home, 4623 Preston Highway, Louisville, Kentucky. Funeral will be at 2 at the same location. Memorial donations in Donald's memory can be made to Home of the Innocents or Bluegrass Care Navigators-Lexington.
