September 28, 1928 – November 14, 2022
Marcella Walter, 94, of Loveland Colorado, went to her heavenly home November 14, 2022, at Brookdale Mariana Butte Memory Care.
Marcie was born September 28, 1928, in Sylvan Grove, Kansas to Eldo Buehring and Helen Gier Buehring. She was baptized at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. Marcie had two siblings, Arlene, and Edward. Her mother Helen died in childbirth with Edward when Marcie was 2 years old. Following that tragic event, their father Eldo and the children moved in with the grandparents and two aunts, all who helped raise the children on the family farm just North of Sylvan Grove. Marcie was a hard worker early on and participated in all the farm chores. Growing up during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl made early years difficult. She attended school at Bethlehem Lutheran School through the 8th grade. Marcie loved to read and learn, but it was necessary for her to begin working at the age of 14, caring for the children and babies of local farmers while they tended to their fields and animals.
Marcie and Howard met through attending the same church, Bethlehem Lutheran. Howard also grew up on a farm West of Sylvan, about 5 miles from where Marcie grew up. Howard was drafted following high school in 1945. At that point in time, Marcie, age 17, ventured West to Denver with a girlfriend. She found work at several places, most notably, Eagle Claw, the fishing company that exists today. There she tied leads on the hooks.
Marcie and Howard corresponded during his time in the Army until his return to Kansas in August 1947. Marcie also returned to Kansas and began working at the local IGA Grocery store and Howard was working for the International Harvester Case Dealer in addition to farming. They continued their relationship and were married June 27, 1948, on a very rainy day.
Marcie and Howard had three children, Helen, the first born arrived in March 1949, followed by Gary in June 1951. Times were difficult to earn a living with farming and the family decided to move to Brighton, CO in August 1954. Marcie was pregnant at the time and Patty was born in December 1954. The family lived for a time in an apartment but soon was able to move into a newly built home where the children were raised, and many memories made until leaving Brighton in 1980. They joined Zion Lutheran Church where they remained members until the time they moved to Drake, near Estes Park. They lived along the Big Thompson River for 13 years, then moving to Loveland where they have resided since 1993.
Marcie was a talented homemaker keeping a neat, tidy home, cooking everything from scratch, canning pickles, fruit and vegetables in the summer and ensuring the family always had home cooked meals. She was an amazing seamstress sewing many of her own clothes and those of the children. Though busy with household chores, she wanted to provide the best life possible in contributing to the family with supplemental income. Marcie enjoyed working and held several different jobs over 26 years, always excelling in any kind of work. She worked at Russell Stover making candies, Bowman Biscuit (later became Keebler) making cookies and crackers, Safeway as a meat wrapper and later in the bakery, FTS Corporation during the Vietnam War making missile components, and later Western Electric for the last 8 years of her working career as an inspector of newly manufactured telephone equipment.
Marcie’s passions were cooking, baking, sewing, and crafting. She loved making embellished shirts, holiday ornaments and embroidered towels for church bazaars or gifting to family and friends. In addition, she was very accomplished at making perfect jam of all flavors, but loved those using rhubarb as the base fruit, all that were shared with others or sold at the bazaar. Marcie was well-known for her pies that she shared with others and that brought high dollars at the annual pie auction at PWC Church. She loved playing cards and dominoes and polka dancing. Waltz’s were her favorite.
The family had a small travel trailer that was parked in Bailey, Co for several years that provided a place to take the children on the weekends. Howard and Marcie took road trips with other friends and family and always took time to show the Kansas family the beautiful Rocky Mountains with picnics or staying in cabins. In later years Marcie enjoyed traveling with Howard in their travel trailer spending winters in Arizona. Marcie loved hosting friends and family in any of their three homes, 4 if you count Arizona.
Marcie made friends anywhere she went and never hesitated to talk to others and often provided food for friends in need and visited them when experiencing illness or surgery. She was active in all the churches she was a member during her time in Colorado; Zion Brighton – 26 years, Mount Calvary Estes Park – 13 years, Immanuel Loveland – 9 years and the past 21 years at Peace with Christ in Ft. Collins.
Marcie is preceded in death by her mother Helen, father Eldo Buehring, brother Edward Buehring, sister Arlene Meier and her husband Raymond, son-in -laws Jim Taylor and Dean Erickson. Also grandparents and many aunts and uncles.
