Michael was born on January 9, 1984, to Lawrence Monahan and Margaret Braden (Alvarez) in Victoria, Texas. After a brief stint in college Michael enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served for 8 years as a combat medic in the aftermath of 9/11. His exemplary service was recognized with numerous medals and commendations.
Michael had his first precious son Pierce Lawrence Monahan in 2007. Michael met his wife Jena Monahan (Harris) in 2014, and they married on September 17, 2016. Michael and Jena went on to have two more beautiful sons, Harris Robert Monahan in 2020, and Jack Henry Monahan in 2023. Michael intensely believed that his children were the “best part” of him, and he was always striving to ensure they felt loved, protected, and safe. Jena described him as a "helicopter dad" because of his constant efforts to shield his boys from any emotional or physical hardship.
Michael's deep passion for music allowed him to intuitively grasp its rhythms and tones, enabling him to teach himself guitar and sing with natural harmony. In addition to his musical talents, Michael was an avid reader, equally drawn to works of fiction and non-fiction. Beyond his fondness for well-crafted fantasy, he avidly pursued inspirational, self-improvement, and spiritual literature. Michael's insatiable thirst for knowledge and exceptional memory cultivated a remarkably intelligent mind. Driven by an unwavering pursuit of personal growth, peace, and happiness, he aspired to become his best self and support his loved ones. Through his compassion and character, Michael left a lasting impact on many lives, a legacy that will be cherished and celebrated by his family, friends, and fellow veterans.
Michael was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother Margarita Del La Rosa Alvarez, paternal grandfather Jack Monahan, paternal grandmother Geraldine Monahan, and maternal uncle and Godfather Damian Alvarez. Michael is survived by his wife and three children, his father Lawrence “Larry” Monahan, mother Margaret Braden (Alvarez), beloved grandfather Robert Alvarez, sister Lauren Whitehead (Monahan), her spouse Dustin Whitehead, their son Liam Whitehead, brother Hunter Pakebusch, his partner Desi Barnett, and their son Fischer Pakebusch, as well as many others who loved and cherished him.
Please join us for a service, followed by a celebration of Michael’s life on October 12, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. at The Island at Pelican Lakes (445 Baja Drive, Windsor, Colorado 80550). A live stream will be provided for those who are unable to attend. Michael preferred attire was blue jeans, cowboy boots, and a button-up shirt, but he always wanted his guests to feel comfortable, so we encourage you to wear whatever makes you feel good. The weather is expected to be pleasant, but we advise bringing extra layers in case the temperature drops and for the evening.
In lieu of flowers and in honor of Michael, please donate to a cause of your choice, suggestions include organizations that support veterans, mental health awareness, and those who have lost a parent.
