Richard Howard “Dick” Cummings of Berthoud, CO passed away at his home on December 29, 2022, after an extended battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Sylvia Cummings; two sons, Michael (Laura) Cummings of Parker and Mark (Lisa) Cummings of Eaton; two stepsons, James (Michelle) Wade of Fort Collins and Derek (Tinker) Wade of Columbus, KS; four brothers, Don (Mary Kay) Cummings of Mitchellville, IA, Norman Cummings of Pueblo West, Tom (Pam) Cummings of Scottsdale, AZ, Gary (Marlene) Cummings of Maxwell, IA; one sister, Janet (Ron) Gilbert of Des Moines, IA; and eleven grandchildren.
Dick was the first child born to the late Howard and Minnie Cummings on March 23, 1934, in Maxwell, IA. He attended Maxwell High School where he played drums and participated in many sports. After graduation in 1952, he enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in San Diego, CA. He served four years as ship electrician, then transferred to the Naval Reserves in San Diego.
Dick earned an Associate in Science Degree at the Electronic Technical Institute in San Diego, followed by earning both a Bachelor and a Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder. His professional employment included Ball Aerospace, Lockheed Martin, and most recently Covidien Medical. Upon leaving Covidien, Dick started his own consulting business, which continued until his cancer diagnosis in 2019 and the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown in 2020.
Dick and Sylvia met and fell in love while employed at Ball Aerospace. They were married on Easter Sunday, April 3, 1988. The Lord blessed them with over 34 years of a loving marriage before He called Dick home to be with Jesus. There is great comfort in knowing that one day they will be reunited again in the Lord's presence in a much better place.
Dick loved technology and animals, especially horses and dogs. He grew up with a paint horse that he rode to school and in parades in his youth. The Lord blessed him and Sylvia with 3 horses at their Berthoud home, as well as several loving dogs and cats.
Dick left behind many family members and friends who loved and will miss him greatly. One of the things that gave Dick the most pleasure in life was being able to help someone in whatever way he could. He was always a very thorough problem-solver and enjoyed doing a job well. His sweet, gentle, and loving spirit made him a friend to all and very much a winner.
