

Murrel was born on September 15, 1924 in Rockdale, Texas. He grew up in El Paso, Texas and graduated from Austin High School. He married Rosemarie Doucet on March 4, 1950 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He served in the United States Navy during WWII aboard the USS Battleship Tennessee. His unit received a “Presidential Unit Citation” from President Harry S. Truman for their participation in the Battle of Surigao Strait.
Murrel was a Past Post Commander of the VFW in Corona, New Mexico. He had been employed as a fireman in El Paso, Texas after the war and worked as a repairman for the El Paso Natural Gas Company for 35 years.
He was preceded in death by a son, John Wesley Plant; two sisters Laverne Waugh and Jean Rice; and parents, Walter and Bertha Plant. He was a member of Trinity church.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Rosemarie Plant of Lubbock, Texas, three daughters, Pat (Coke) Johnston of Dallas, Margie (Wayne) Taylor of Deming, New Mexico, and Barbara (Bob) of Lubbock; a son David (Wanda) of Orlando, Florida; 8 grandchildren Courtney Thomason, Ryan Taylor, Josh Taylor, Jon Taylor, Brandi Pena, Tricia Goodwin, Stephen Plant, and Stacy Soto; and 3 great-grandchildren, Kaelea, Madelyn, and Sophia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
