Betty Lee Young (Mayes) was born on November 2,1937 in Fort Davis, Texas and passed away peacefully on October 6, 2025, in Austin, Texas with her children by her side. She was 87 years old. She was a devoted member of Southcrest Baptist Church in Lubbock.
Betty's life was marked by a deep devotion to her family and a steadfast commitment to sharing kindness and faith with those around her. She was the beloved mother of Betty Ann Sheppard (Leon), Sharon Brown (Dr. Paul Brown), and Nancy Harbour. In 1970, she became the bonus mother to W.H. Young's children, Steve Young (Sherry), Ron Young, Lydia Noll (Keith Noll) and Judy Sandlin (Johnny Sandlin).
Her legacy also lives on through her 10 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Known as Mammaw. She welcomed them all with a warm hug and a radiant smile.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harvey Harbour, her second husband, William H. Young, sons, Harvey Harbour, Jr, and Ron Young, her brother Bill Mayes, parents Henry and Melva Mayes and son-in law, Leon Sheppard.
Throughout her life, Betty found joy in bringing comfort to others. She and husband W.H. Young enjoyed traveling in their motorhome, fishing, and visiting family and friends.
Accompanied by her faithful dogs Webster and Samson, she regularly visited nursing homes and hospitals to spread cheer and share God's message of love and healing. Her gentle spirit and compassionate heart left a lasting impression on all who encountered her during those visits.
She was especially known for her enchilada casserole- a favorite at family events- and for her pecan and mincemeat pies. She lovingly prepared her rich fudge using pecans she gathered from her pecan tree in her yard. It was a yearly treat enjoyed by everyone.
Betty's presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her unwavering faith, nurturing spirit, and joyful nature created a legacy which will continue to inspire generations to come.
A funeral service will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home. She will be buried next to her loving husband, William Young at Resthaven Cemetery in Lubbock, Texas.
