
On Wednesday, December 12, 2018, Carolyn Mayfield Taylor passed away peacefully, at age 97. There will be visitation on Friday, December 14, 2018, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at LakeRidge Chapel and Memorial Designers. The services for Carolyn will be on Saturday, December 15, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church.Carolyn Taylor was born on January 10, 1921, to Judge Harrison Mayfield and Berl Edwards Mayfield in Plainview, Texas. She was raised in Canyon, Texas with her brother, George. Growing up on a ranch in Canyon, Carolyn often rode horses and helped with the animals daily. She graduated from Randall County High School and graduated from West Texas Teachers College (which is West Texas A&M). She met R. C. Taylor and they married November 8, 1941. During the war, R. C. was deployed to Germany, and Carolyn taught school and also worked as a Civil Service employee. After the war in 1945, they decided to live in Childress, Texas and co-owned a grocery store there. In 1947, she gave birth to their son, Robert. After much research, they decided to move to Lubbock in 1949 where R. C. started his new business, R. C. Taylor Wholesale Tobacco Company. Carolyn helped out with the new business whenever she could and in 1952, their daughter, Carol, was born.Carolyn’s giving spirit was put to good use in many community organizations throughout her years in Lubbock. She worked tirelessly volunteering with the YWCA and helping them raise the funds and build their building on 35th Street. She won their Women of Excellence Award in 2013. Junior League of Lubbock, and Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Church Presbytery were also areas where she volunteered often and served in leadership roles for many years. Through the years, Carolyn taught Sunday School to students and adults. She also served on her church’s governing body, Session, for many years. Carolyn was also a true patriot and loved her God, her country, and Texas Tech University! Almost every day she wore red and black and rooted for her Red Raiders in every sport in person or on TV. The last several years, she was not only a wonderful homemaker, wife, mother, she was a fun grandmother, too.Survivors include her son, Robert Taylor, Jr., wife Jan; daughter, Carol Keeling, husband Dr. Jeff Keeling all of Lubbock; grandchildren, Dr. Robert Schmid, wife Beth; Amy Taylor of Venice, CA; Clay Taylor, wife Catherine of Southlake, TX; Lauren Burch and husband Kevin of Plano, TX; Alyson Cameron and husband Dr. Russell Cameron of Kalamazoo, MI; and Taylor Merchant, husband Joe of Lubbock, and twelve great-grandchildren.Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, R. C. Taylor, and brother, George Mayfield.
