Born September 14, 1917 in DeLeon, Texas, she was the daughter of Bolten Elijah and Nannie Viola Hattox. She married Henry Wesley Shipp on February12, 1938 and they were married for 50 years. Henry died on March 6, 1988.
She is survived by two daughters; Monette Ince of Austin, Texas and Mitzi Babka of Saint Charles, Illinois; 4 grandchildren, Davette Ince of Austin, Texas, Dina Ince of Austin, Texas, Tiffany Bound of DeKalb, Illinois and Tom Babka of Norfolk, Massachusetts; and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings, Gaston Hattox, Payne Hattox, Clay Hattox, and La Delle Stiegler.
Doris lived in St. Charles, Illinois for the past nine years but prior to that was a resident of Lubbock, Texas and active member of St. John's United Methodist Church. When Doris was 60, she joined the Lubbock YWCA and learned to swim, and continued swimming three times a week until the age of 90 when she moved to Illinois to live with her daughter, Mitzi and son-in-law, Mike Babka. At that point, she began walking on the treadmill for 20 to 30 minutes six days a week and continued doing so until shortly before her death. Everyone who knew her was touched by her indelible spirit, her kindness, her humor and especially her love. She repeatedly said death is a part of life and not to be feared. Have faith.
