

Edward William (Bill) Cartwright, Jr., died Sunday, October 25, 2015 at his home in Lubbock, following a lengthy illness. He was 93 years old. He was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on August 26, 1922. He married Marjorie Gilbert, also of Santa Fe, on June 18, 1944. The couple settled in Lubbock, where Bill graduated from Texas Tech University. He was a registered Professional Engineer and a Licensed Architect, in Texas.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie and by his brother Dr. Robert Cartwright. He is survived by his sister Margaret Loomis, of Santa Fe; children, Kay Thomas (Keith), of Poteau, Okla., Barbara Platz (Eric), of Santa Fe, Mike Cartwright (Tee), of Lubbock, Pat Bennett (Harry), of Evergreen, CO.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and 13 nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Texas Tech in 1946, Bill worked for Walker Architecture for two years before joining the firm of Atcheson, Atkinson Architects. In 1956 he was made a partner and the firm became Atcheson, Atkinson and Cartwright Architects and Engineers. In 1974, Bill and his partner Jimmy Atcheson separated from the firm to form the Architecture Division of Parkhill, Smith and Cooper, Inc., under the name of Atcheson Cartwright and Associates, later known as AC Associates. The firm subsequently dropped the AC name to be known as Parkhill, Smith and Cooper, Inc. He was promoted to an owner of PSC in 1982. Bill was also Past President of the Lubbock Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Friends and colleagues who knew Bill admired his intellectual curiosity, his love of reading and learning, his deep faith, and his subtle sense of humor. Bill was a charter member of Forrest Heights United Methodist Church and the South Plains Lions Club. He was an avid tennis player well into his sixties. His other hobbies included stamp collecting and genealogy. Bill was active in his church and in the Lion’s Club. He served as President of the South Plains Chapter and was a recipient of the Lion’s Melvin Fellows Award.
