

Herald W. Winkler, 91, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away on May 07, 2016. Herald was born August 18, 1924, in Indianapolis, IN. An only son, he and his father moved to Dallas, Texas in 1930. His mother, being of poor heath, passed away in 1934. While attending SMU, Herald was drafted into WWII in 1942, serving in the U.S. Army Air Force. Herald married the love of his life, Peggy Anne Lewis, on January 29, 1949. He attributes her as the primary reason for his success in life. Anne preceded him in death on October 8, 2008. Herald was a legend in the field of Petroleum, beginning with his first job in Denver City, Texas, in 1948. His knowledge of gas lift was world renowned and earned him many honors.
After spending his early years in the petroleum industry, Herald returned to school and earned a Ph.D. in 1969 from the University of Texas in Austin, taking up a teaching position in the Petroleum Engineering Department at Texas Tech University in 1970 soon becoming the Chairman of the Department. He retained status of Professor Emeritus until his passing.
Herald is survived by his two children, Karen and Steven, both reside in Oregon. In lieu of customary remembrances, the family suggests donations made to Hospice of Lubbock, Meals on Wheels, Humane Society of Lubbock or the Alzheimer’s Society.
