Joe attended school in Floydada and upon graduation, left the family farm and joined the Army. He later earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education from Texas Tech. He taught high school English for over 30 years. After his retirement from teaching, he embarked on another adventure building Habitat for Humanity homes.
Joe V. married Joan Collinsworth in 1987. He was a proud member of First United Methodist Church and Lubbock Masonic Lodge. He will be remembered for many things, especially his passion to serve others and his sharp wit.
Joe is survived by his sister Eulalia and husband Eschol Blankenship. His brother Hansel, sister Twila, and wife Joan preceded him in death. His children are Cindy Holcomb and Scott Sanders, grandchildren Dacey (“Bobo”) and Trey Dunnam, Chantry and Olivia Dunlap, Dusty and Shanna Sanders, Rusty and Jenifer Sanders, and Amanda Walton. Joe has seven great-grandchildren, one niece and six nephews.
Visitation will be held Sunday January 11, 2026, from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Funeral services will take place on Monday January 12, 2026 from 10:00 am – 11:00 am in Resthaven’s Abbey Chapel.
