He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Maedell, and his infant daughter, Ann Marguerite. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Drusilla (Cutright) Castleman, and sons John Lance (Carrie Smith) Castleman of Plano and Larry (Sherolyn Devaney) Castleman of Lubbock. He is survived by 5 grandchildren: Allison and Lindsey Castleman of Plano and Sydney, Kelby, and Jarrett Castleman of Lubbock.
John graduated from Levelland High School in 1953, from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor’s degree in 1961, and from North Texas State University with two graduate degrees in 1969. He held various jobs before becoming a public school teacher in Big Spring and Midland. Later – during 30 years of service at Lubbock Christian University – John was one of three original teacher education department members that started the teacher certification program at LCU, was chairman of that department, and acted as school registrar and director of testing; he retired in 2000. He was a member of Green Lawn Church of Christ. He wrote several published articles on the teaching profession. He enjoyed playing Bridge, watching the Texas Rangers, and was a self-proclaimed “political junkie”, taking in all the news programming and C-Span he could get. In retirement, he wrote two books and eleven songs, and was working on a third book when he died.
In lieu of flowers, family is recommending donations to Meals on Wheels.
