

Funeral for John J. (J) Sloan will be at the Second Baptist Church on Thursday, May 29th at 2:00 p.m. J. died at Covenant Hospital on Sunday, May 25th. He was born on May 2, 1926, to Ozro and Grace Henderson Sloan on their family farm near Whitewright, Grayson County, Texas where he was reared. After his father’s death when J. was only two years old, the remaining family members moved in with his mother’s parents, The Rev. J.A. and Susie Henderson, with whom they resided until J. was twelve. He attended a two room school during his elementary years and graduated from Whitewright High School. He was drafted into the Army during World War II. After basic training he was sent to Washington D.C. His duty involved work in helping develop the Atomic Bomb. After the war he received a degree from Austin College in Sherman. He worked for the IRS in Lubbock and Plainview. He returned to Lubbock in 1960 when he became supervisor of the Lubbock IRS office from which he retired in the early 1980’s. He then opened his own tax accounting office that he operated for more than thirty years until his death. For the past twenty years he was assisted in his practice by his daughter, Lisa. He is survived by Billie Glynn McAdams Sloan whom he married at First Baptist Church in Plainview on August 14, 1959 and two children, Lisa Kay Arp (Ryan) and John Glynn Sloan and one beloved only granddaughter, Sloan Katherine Arp; several brothers- and- sisters in-law and many loving nieces and newphews form both the Sloan and McAdams families. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James Sloan. He was a long-time member of Second Baptist Church, serving faithfully for many years as a Sunday morning worker in the church office and on the church finance committee. He became a Mason at 21 years of age and was worshipful master of the lodge in Plainview. Memorial contributions may be made to Second Baptist Church.
