

John was born in Pasadena, Texas on September 10, 1942, the youngest son to Loy and Ruth Utley Young. He graduated from Galena Park High School, and attended college at Arkansas Tech and Lee College. He served in the U.S. Army for three years as a member of the Army Security Agency. John worked at various nuclear sites as a construction engineer in Arkansas, Missouri, and finally Washington State. In Washington, John became a grandpa and was affectionately given the name "Bumpie" by his first grandson, a name that would stick with him from that time on.
When he moved to Lubbock, Texas, he began volunteering at Lubbock-Cooper. John was an active part of the Watch Dog organization. He also mentored students and was a valued substitute teacher. Eventually, he became known as "Mr. Bumpie" to all the students and teachers at Lubbock-Cooper. It was a nickname John loved and answered to proudly. He was a very active early riser who enjoyed boating, fishing, working with students, and attending all his grandkid's activities. He was a beloved member of Vandelia Church of Christ.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Utley Young; and his father, Loy Young.
John is survived by his previous wife, Nancy Young, of Amarillo, TX; son, David Young, and wife, Becca of Buffalo, MN; daughter, Kimberly White, and husband, Chris White of Lubbock, TX; brother, Frank Young and wife, Betsy of Houston, Texas; sister, Evelyn Lancaster, and husband Robert of Montgomery, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews. John's grandchildren include Taison, Samantha, Zachary, and Katie Young, Keaton and Kynzie White, and Jaden and Devin Fortune. He has one great grandson, Adrian Young.
The Celebration of John's life will be held September 15, 2015 at Vandelia Church of Christ, 2002 60th St., Lubbock, TX, 79412 at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Across the Street Ministries. www.acrossthestreetministries.org.
