Judy, MeMe to so many, was born in San Diego, California to Leon Oak and Bonnie Beatrice Hall on January 12, 1946. She is the younger sister of Janet Hall.
After graduating from Amarillo High in 1964, Judy married Jerry Calvin Teeas. Together they started a family. Renee, was born in 1965, and Bonnie, in 1966. Bud worked in construction and Judy as a hair stylist.
God’s plans led Judy to bring her girls to Lubbock, and after years of hard work, Judy saved enough to build a house in Shallowater. It was here God provided Judy with a passion for bookkeeping, and she began taking on work for local Lubbock cotton offices. She also enjoyed raising miniature poodles, and then brought West Highland White Terriers into our lives. We are eternally grateful for that.
Judy had many reliable forms of transportation over the years to get her back and forth. From her beloved Mustang, a Renault, an original Dodge minivan, a Ford Explorer, a super fancy Mercedes, a Buick station wagon, and finally her ever reliable Kia Soul, Judy always said God provided her the perfect car at the perfect time. No matter the vehicle, she always travelled in style.
Speaking of driving, there wasn’t a trip Meme wasn’t ready to take if it involved any of her 6 grandkids or 5 great grandchildren. From elementary choir concerts to scouting events, Land Arts exhibitions, high school marching band contests and UTSA football, MeMe was in perpetual motion for anything family related.
And we all watched in amazement as Judy went on some amazing adventures. From an Alaska cruise to working in Liverpool, England, MeMe even found time to squeeze in a visit to Russia. Surely someone there has a fond memory of Judy talking in her West Texas twang.
By far, her favorite trips were to family bi-annual reunions. Hall Family Reunions were where MeMe loved on all her relatives young and old including the “outlaws”. Upwards of 100+ family members show up to these events to honor the Original 9 Hall brothers and sisters who now have children, grandchildren and great grandchildren all over the United States.
Her love of cooking and baking brought the grandkids into the kitchen where she put them to work. Recipe books were an unnecessary hindrance; Judy lovingly taught all of them how to bake the most delicious pumpkin, buttermilk and pecan pies. Christmas and Thanksgiving were festive family times, always completed with family poppers. God has surely restored one of those paper crowns to its rightful place on our Hall Family Queen.
Friends here in Lubbock were considered family by Judy. Whether in the form of a Christmas brisket for longtime friend Debbie, or sharing a pecan pie at American Windpower Center events, Judy’s friendship manifested itself in many ways. All will fondly remember Judy for her quick wit, wonderful stories, and as a cheerleader for all family and close friends.
As sure as God has made Judy whole again, she is watching proudly over her happiest work, her life’s work: her family. Judy leaves behind daughters, Renee Upston of Santa Fe, and Bonnie Beatrice Taylor of San Antonio.
Their husbands, Mark Upston and Andrew Taylor, along with her grandchildren Eugene Upston of New Zealand, Joel Upston of Albuquerque, Steven Upston of Santa Fe, Alyson Taylor of Puyallup, Aron Taylor of The Woodlands, and Austin Taylor of San Antonio will celebrate Judy every time they see a beautiful sunset or garage sale, eat a donut, or hear Elvis, the Beatles and The Beach Boys on the radio.
The story of Judy’s life will be shared with her great grandchildren, Aurelia, Xavier, Elijah, Everett and Ruth so they too will know how to joyfully and unconditionally love.
No matter how you choose, pull up a chair and remember Judy over a “Mymosa,” a favorite cup of black coffee, or an extra helping of dessert. Please celebrate the joy you brought to each other’s lives.
Jiggity-jog, MeMe. Jiggity-jog.
Judith Leon Oak Teeas finished her life of love here at 78 years of age.
