Marvin was born on June 6, 1925, in Shamrock, Texas, into a family of two brothers and one sister. He married Evelyn George on September 1, 1951. He graduated from Phillips High School and later on from Texas Tech University with a B.S. Degree in Agronomy. He worked towards a M.S. Degree in Soils Base Exchange Complex. He worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a Soil Scientist for several years. He was a former member of the American Society of Agronomy. He later worked for Ford Motor Company and Bruckner Mack Trucks, retiring from the latter.
Marvin was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Marines in the Pacific theatre. He took part in the battle for Iwo Jima as well as the securing and occupying of the Japanese Naval Base at Sasebo, Kyushu, after the surrender of that country.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Joe Henry and Malley (Boyles) Whitmire; son, Edwin; sister, Joyce Braswell; and brothers, Doc and Garvin Whitmire.
Those left to cherish his memories include his wife, Evelyn; two sons: Kent and wife Ellen of Artesia, New Mexico, and Mark and wife Trena of Snyder; five grandsons; two granddaughters; seven great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
