

Dr. Monty Davenport, 77, of Lubbock passed away on Thursday, December 29, 2011. Graveside services will be held at Resthaven Memorial Park on Monday, January 2, 2012 at 10:00am. A Memorial Service will follow at Second Baptist Church, 6109 Chicago Ave., at 11:00am. The family will receive friends at Resthaven Funeral Home Monday evening from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.
Monty Earl Davenport was born May 16, 1934 in Crowell, Foard County, Texas to Earl and Irene Pierce Davenport. Monty married Janada Sue Gound on August 28, 1954. He graduated from Lubbock High School and Texas Tech University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduating, he became an Instructor in Mechanical Engineering at TTU. In 1957, he was one of two Texans to receive an Atomic Energy Commission fellowship in Nuclear Technology. He received his M.S. in Nuclear Energy and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. In 1966, he began his career in teaching, research and administration in higher education at TTU. He received special recognition as an outstanding young engineer by the South Plains Chapter, Texas Society of Professional Engineers, and was a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas. He served TTU as Associate Dean of Engineering, Associate Vice President of Plant Services and Vice President of Operations. He retired from TTU in 1998.
In 2003, Monty married Dee Dee (Poage) Stewart. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed traveling. He was a faithful member of Second Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sue and his daughter, Kelli Hartman.
He is survived by his wife of eight years, Dee Dee; his daughter, Kimberly Baker and husband, Greg; his aunt, Willie Mae Davenport; his cousin, Tommy Gamble; Dee Dee’s children, Ronda Stewart-Wilcox and husband, Rodney; Karen Alderson and husband, Craig; Paul Stewart and wife, Laurie; and Sandy Jarasius and husband, Linas. He is survived by four grandchildren, Matt and Chris Hartman and Grant and Abigail Baker. He is also survived by six step-grandchildren.
