Our beloved father and grandfather, Ovid Troy Myers, passed peacefully early Thursday morning August 22, 2024, in Lubbock, Texas, at the impressive age of 94 after a life richly lived in service and kindness. Ovid, or “Bud” as he was commonly known by friends and family, was born in Plainfield, Indiana on September 9, 1929, to Merritt and Edna Myers. He was one of four children - the only son among three sisters. He grew up in an era filled with war and economic depression, but yet remained positive throughout his lifetime.
He enlisted in the United States Army in 1951 and spent several months in Germany with the 2nd Armored Division. He proudly served until being honorably discharged in 1953. After his service, he moved to Lubbock, Texas where he joined the Lubbock Fire Department in 1962. He worked there for 32 years, as a firefighter and an equipment operator, until his retirement in 1994. He was also a member of Southcrest Baptist Church for many years.
In addition to his firefighting career, he also co-owned M&M Fence Company for over a decade and owned and ran Myers Postage Vending Service for over 20 years. While his work ethic was robust, he also knew how to appreciate the best things in life! In his younger years he enjoyed hunting elk and deer in Colorado and fishing Lake Falcon with his firefighting buddies. Later, he reveled in Dallas Cowboys games and NASCAR races with his son, Glenn and other friends and family.
Bud was a joy to be around, and his attitude of perseverance was remarkable. Bud could be in the middle of a tornado and look you straight in the eye and say, “Cum si, cum sa (Come see, come si)” which means “neither good nor bad”. That was his approach to life: never let any obstacle or challenge stop you from moving forward. Another one of his common phrases was, “Whatever works!” He always accepted what life threw at him and moved on with a smile. We will forever miss his ability to lighten the mood, provide solutions, and support and love us when we needed it most.
Remaining to cherish Bud’s memory are his son, Glenn Myers and wife Debby, Bud’s granddaughter, Amanda Myers Brotherton and husband David Chase Brotherton; Glenn’s mother, Alma, Bud’s sister, Wanda MacDonnell; brother-in-law Bob Taff; brother-in-law Joe Taff and sister-in-law Carole Taff, and Geneice Bull, his loyal friend and caregiver. He also leaves behind nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Vera Turpin and her husband Charles; and his twin sister, Mona Shutters and her husband Claude “Bud” Shutters; and his brother-in-law Ken MacDonnell.
The family would like to thank SYNERGY HomeCare in Lubbock, Texas including Amy Peck and all their excellent staff who so professionally and lovingly cared for Bud. Additionally, we appreciate Vitality Living Shadow Hills and Bridge Hospice for providing such quality care and personalized assistance. Finally, we are deeply indebted to the Veterans Administration’s Home-Based Care Team including RN Adrianne Gilbert-Tillman and Nurse Practitioner AnnaLee Jimenez and so many others who offered individualized, and expert care. Bud defied the odds of his Parkinson’s diagnosis and maintained a high quality of life due to the efforts of so many people. We are forever grateful for your compassion and care.
Visitation will be held Friday September 6, 2024, at 1:00PM at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 5740 19th St, Lubbock, Texas. Funeral services will be held the same day at 2:00PM at Rest Haven Funeral Home, with Pastor Jerry Stewart officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by the Lubbock Regional Honor Guard. The Lubbock Fire Department will also recognize Bud’s dedicated service with a Last Call ceremony at the gravesite.
We welcome all who knew him to join us in commemorating the life of a man who was loved deeply and will be missed. “Rollin’ with the flow” was Bud’s favorite phrase, and we will continue to do just that in memory and celebration of him and his exceptional journey.
Memorial donations in Bud’s memory may be directed to Dave’s Wish, a non-profit division of Bridge Hospice at www.bridge-hospice.com/DavesWish or the South-Central Chapter of the Parkinson's Foundation at www.parkinson.org/southcentral.
