Paul Christian Perner Jr., age 94, of Lubbock, died Friday, September 2, 2016. P.C. was born on November 15, 1921 in Ozona, Texas to Paul and Elizabeth Odom Perner, a Crocket County pioneer ranching family.
After graduating high school and attending Texas A&M University, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII and was stationed at San Angelo Army Airfield. In San Angelo is where he met and married Peggy Jean McDaniel on May 3, 1943. After honorable discharge, he returned to Crockett County to take over the family ranching operations.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, in January 2004 after 60 years of marriage, his parents and three sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Pam Goodwin and husband Myrl of Canyon, TX; two sons, Paul C. Perner III and wife Ginger; and Philip Perner of Ozona. Grandchildren Lee Upton of Christoval; step-grandson, Clint Perner and wife Amy of Creedmor, TX; Paul (Pablo) Perner IV and wife Melissa of Ozona; great granddaughters Whitney Upton of Houston and Bailey Upton of San Angelo; great grandsons, Cooper Liam Upton, his mother Maja Belisova and Paul Christian (Cinco) Perner V. Two nieces, Anne Capron and husband Mike of Sheffield, TX, and Joan Wilson of Sunland, CA.
P.C. was a rancher most of his life. He experienced success, took pride and will be remembered for raising winning quarter horses both on the race track and rodeo arena. He was a 50 plus year member of the AQHA and served on the Ozona school board. After retiring from ranching and moving his horse operations to Lubbock, he enjoyed going to the Senior Citizens where he made many friends while playing pool and dominoes. During that time, he continued his competitive spirit by winning metals in those games at senior citizen competitions. P.C. and his sisters, Pauline Perner Montgomery, Elizabeth Perner Wilson and Mary Perner Daniels, arranged for the home of their parents, Paul and Lizzie Perner, to become part of the Crockett County public building system to be used for a public library. The two-story Spanish style was completely remodeled and the Crockett County Public Library opened to the public in October of 1985. The family extends their gratitude to Accolade Hospice, the staff of Wedgewood South and long-time caretaker Patricia Garcia for their compassionate and loving care.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Crockett County Public Library, P.O. Box 3030, Ozona, Texas, 76943, or a charity of choice.
