Phyllis was born June 20, 1945, to Elmer and Irene Long in Big Spring, Texas. She grew up in Stanton, Texas, where she discovered her love of music at an early age. She played piano and by middle school was an organist at First Baptist Church in Stanton. After graduating from Stanton High School in 1963, Phyllis went on to receive her degree in Child Development and Family Relations from Texas Tech University. She married her high school sweetheart, Clinton “Cheetah” Avery Miller, a fellow “Sorehead” from Stanton, on September 2, 1967, at the First Baptist Church in Stanton. Committed to a career in social services, she held positions at both Lubbock County General Assistance and Workforce Solutions.
A devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend, Phyllis dedicated herself to those she loved. She gleefully signed up for every activity that her sons joined, which meant tirelessly serving on PTA boards, booster and soccer associations, and thespian societies. In addition to her many Chamber of Commerce committees, she was also an active congregant in various Baptist churches and loved leading programs such as Parents Day Out, Acteens, and after-school initiatives. She treasured her relationships most of all and never missed an opportunity to send a card, place a phone call, or holler across the street. She never met a stranger, and never left the room without making a friend.
She is survived by her husband Clint Miller of Lubbock, TX; sons Chad Anthony Miller of New York, NY, and Brian Miller of Lubbock, TX; grandson Jacob Miller and his mother Holly Loftus of Anchorage, AK; sister Becky Blythe of Atlanta, GA; niece Alexandria “Lexi” Blythe of San Francisco, CA; and cousins Kenda Heckler of Andrews, TX, and Horace Hamilton of North Richland Hills, TX.
