Quatha Baker

Quatha Power Baker was born to parents Mozelle Padgett Power and Vaughn Bennett Power on May 21, 1935. She graduated from Lubbock High School in 1952. In 1954 she met William Joseph Baker. They were married in Ford Memorial Chapel on September 4, 1954.

Quatha attended Texas Tech University, majoring in art. In addition to her studies in art, she graduated in 1965 with a teaching certificate. Quatha’s career in education included teaching private kindergarten at First Baptist Church, as well as teaching first grade, second grade and elementary art in the Lubbock Independent School District. She taught school for thirty years before retiring in May of 2000.

During the same time Quatha was working as a schoolteacher, she dedicated fifty years as the director of a preschool Sunday School program at First Baptist Church. She was joined in this effort by her mother, Mozelle Power, who served as the class secretary.

Following her time as a Sunday School teacher, Quatha became interested in joining the Downtown Bible Class where she served as the first woman president. Her love of God was always evident in her service to others.

In 2020, Quatha moved from her beloved home of Lubbock to Houston to be closer to her daughter, niece, and granddaughter. She entered into her eternal home on July 16th, 2023.

Quatha was preceeded in death by her father Vaughn Bennett Power; mother, Mozelle Padgett Power; daughter, Anna Elizabeth Baker; husband, William Joseph Baker; sister, Bettye Bennett Wright; and brother-in-law Bill Joe Wright.

She is survived by her son John B. Baker and wife Suzanne Baker of Tahoka; daughter Leslie K. Thomas and husband Tony Thomas of Houston; daughter Vanessa B. Stuart and husband Dennis Stuart of McKinney; grandchildren Jacoby Baker, Warren Baker, Robert Baker, Daniel Baker, Allison Enos, Whitney Goff, Garrett Stuart, and Braydon Stuart. She is also survived by fifteen great-grandchildren.
