

Rita Jo Melton, a cherished daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, went to be with our Lord on August 30, 2023, at the age of 87. She was born on January 11, 1936, in the close-knit community of Telephone, Texas to Earnest Albert Jones and Hettie Viola Harrison Jones. She learned valuable life lessons from them, including the importance of hard work, integrity, and the bonds of family. These principles became the foundation of her character, shaping her into the remarkable woman she became. Soon after her birth, the family moved to West Texas and Rita grew up in the small town of Idalou, Texas, and later made her home in Lubbock, Texas, where she left a lasting legacy of love, kindness, and dedication throughout her life.
Rita embarked on a fulfilling career in banking, beginning as a teller at Idalou State Bank. Her dedication, coupled with her commitment to providing excellent service, soon led to her ascending through the ranks primarily employed at Wells Fargo Bank. Rita Jo eventually retired as the Vice President of Public Relations at FirstBank and Trust in Lubbock, Texas, a testament to her determination and expertise in the banking industry.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Rita was a devoted wife and mother who cherished her family above all else. She shared her life with her loving husband, Leroy Choice "Bo" Melton Jr., for 27 wonderful years, and was a pillar of strength and support for her children and grandchildren. Her home was a haven of warmth, laughter, and love. Rita and her beloved husband, Bo, shared a special bond of mutual support and shared values. They stood side by side, not only in their marriage but also in their commitment to civic organizations. Together, they dedicated their time, energy, and passion to various community causes, leaving a profound impact on the lives of those they served. Rita's infectious smile and unwavering kindness touched the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to know her.
In her leisure time, Rita enjoyed a diverse range of hobbies that brought her immense joy. She had a talent for calligraphy, transforming letters and words into works of art with her elegant hand. Her immaculate yard was a testament to her tenacious hard work, as she lovingly brought beauty and life to her surroundings. Rita was also a devout Christian, and her faith was an integral part of her life. She and Bo joined Southcrest Baptist Church in 1960, where she found spiritual solace and a loving community of fellow believers. Her unwavering faith provided her with strength and comfort throughout her journey.
One of Rita's greatest joys in life was playing basketball. Her passion for the sport was undeniable, and she possessed a natural talent on the court. Whether competing with friends or engaging in friendly matches, Rita's love for basketball shone brightly, bringing joy to all who shared in the game with her.
Rita's passing leaves a void that can never be filled, but her memory will forever be cherished by her family and friends. She leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and kindness that will continue to inspire and uplift those who were fortunate enough to know her. She is survived by her loving family, including her daughter, Rehj Hoeffner and husband Steve of Lubbock; grandson, Ian Hoeffner and wife Lauren of Lubbock; granddaughters, Stefanie Hoeffner of Lubbock and Leah Melton of Los Angeles, and great granddaughter, Margot Hoeffner of Lubbock, along with a host of relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her loving parents, devoted husband, four brothers, a sister, and a step-daughter. Rita's reunion with her loved ones in the beyond brings comfort to those who remember her with deep affection.
Rita Jo Melton touched the lives of many with her warmth, kindness, and unwavering love. Let us gather to remember and honor her as we say our final goodbyes and celebrate a life well-lived. The family will receive guests from 4pm-8pm on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at Resthaven Funeral Home. Funeral Services will follow at 9am on September 6, 2023 in Resthaven's Abbey Chapel. Internment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park.
