Sally Word Lawson passed away Monday, April,13, 2026 at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas after battling Pancreatic Cancer. Sally was born March 27, 1969, to Thomas Barbee Word and Gay Morrison Word in Lubbock, Texas.
Sally grew up in Lubbock where she lived for forty-three of her fifty-seven years. She graduated from Lubbock Coronado High School in 1987. She took piano lessons from elementary through high school and voice lessons during her junior and senior high school years. Sally was a beautiful soprano and began her love of choir in junior high, participated in her high school choir and early years at Texas Tech in the choir for non-music majors. She was a member of the Coronado choir and its show choir. During that time, the choir was invited to perform in Philadelphia as part of the 200th anniversary of the United States Constitution. She was also a member of the New Beginnings Youthreach Ministry at the Broadway Church of Christ that toured and performed at many other churches throughout the southwest. Her love of singing remained strong throughout her life as she regularly sang with the praise team at church and joined the Lubbock Civic Choral early in her married life.
Sally graduated from Texas Tech University in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in finance. She was an active member of Campus Advance at Broadway Church of Christ where she met her husband, Greg. They married December 15th, 1990, at Quaker Avenue Church of Christ.
After having their first daughter, Natalie, they moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where they attended Santa Fe Church of Christ and fell in love with New Mexican food and attending the Santa Fe Opera! In 2000, they had their second daughter, Whitney, and the Lawson family was made complete. After seven years in New Mexico, they moved back to Lubbock where Sally started her beloved career at First Ag Credit and through a merger is now known as Capital Farm Credit.
Sally was committed to developing, nurturing, keeping and growing a strong Co-op system that truly benefited the farming and ranching community. She had the honor of attending Banking school over the course of three summers at The University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business, which she loved doing. Over the years she advanced up the corporate ladder to become the CFO of Capital Farm Credit which led the Lawson family to our current home in Bryan, Texas. While her time in that role was cut short, her impact was deep and widespread. She was a gentle and graceful person who was an incredible mentor and strong leader. She truly loved Capital and the people who work there. Almost anyone who has worked with her can quote one of her most used lines, “it’s what we say Grace over”.
Sally was an avid runner and completed a half marathon (which she was determined to do before her 50th birthday). She could almost always be found with a book in her hand or watching a cooking show on television with her girls. She absolutely loved to travel and see the world but had an extra soft spot for the beach. She sat on the board of the Food Bank of Lubbock for many years and was the head of the finance committee at Broadway for several years, both of which she loved very much.
Most importantly, she was a loving wife to Greg, mother to Natalie and Whitney, and a friend to many. Sally was a loyal and fierce person who anyone could turn to for advice or comfort. She fought this awful disease with poise and grace, never wavering in her faith. She regularly commented on how this sickness allowed her to share her testimony and faith in God, which she held steadfast to through to the end.
Sally is survived by her husband, Greg, two daughters Natalie, and Whitney Lord (Jackson); mother, Gay; sisters Christy Robertson (Keith), Katie Bimmerle (John). Also, mother-in-law Joan Lawson, brother-in-law Randy, sister-in-law Donna Lowe (Dale), and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father Barbee Word, father-in-law Don Lawson and niece Melissa Lowe.
We want to express how thankful we are to everyone for their prayers and kind words. We would like to thank everyone at MD Anderson who cared for Sally. Thank you to everyone at Capital Farm Credit for how they cherished Sally and have helped us throughout this entire journey.
In lieu of flowers we ask that you donate to MD Anderson Pancreatic Cancer Research, American Cancer Society Pancreatic Cancer Research, St. Jude, or the Lubbock Food Bank.
