Shirley Hallman Ickes died on April 27, 2024 of natural causes. She was born Jan. 2, 1927 to John and Magda (née Swenson) Hallman in Salt Lake City, Utah. Shirley graduated from East High School, and attended the University of Utah. She married William Keith Ickes on Aug. 27th, 1946 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple.
Shirley lived in Des Moines, Iowa, and Detroit and Lansing, Michigan, but spent over 60 years of her life in Lubbock, Texas. She obtained a BA in both Special Education and Home Economics Education at Texas Tech. She taught Special Education for 20 years in the Lubbock Independent School District.
Shirley’s husband and her four children were her life. The love she felt for her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren, and the children she taught at school was profound. Her highest priorities were to teach and nurture her children, and to love her husband and help him achieve his professional goals. She was a talented seamstress and artistically proficient in many types of needlework--skills she happily passed down to her daughters.
She loved the Lord with all her heart. and she loved praying to him. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served her fellow church members in many different ways, including Stake Relief Society President and Jr. Sunday School Coordinator. She crocheted 81 baby afghans and caps for the babies in her congregation. She loved the members, and they returned that love.
She and her husband Bill were members of the Lubbock Flathead Antique Car Club and enjoyed the travel and the friendships they made there.
She is survived by her four children, son William Ickes, daughters Bonnie Tanner, Patricia Mitchell, and Joy Denison, 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and 2 grandchildren.
