She died at home in Smyer with family at her side on January 22nd, 2026 at the age of 92 years following a mercifully brief battle with dementia.
She filled her days and her heart with 35 years spent teaching at Smyer schools and 48 years spent serving and loving God at First Baptist Church in Smyer. She touched, loved, and will be missed by so many.
She was the gem at the heart of our family, and we will forever treasure her memory. She was instrumental in the raising of her granddaughters, who began the tradition of calling her "G." She leaves behind granddaughters: Ariel, Zephyr, and Zenyth; grandchildren-in-law who loved her like blood: Jake, Paul, and Sara; and great-grandchildren who knew no end to her love: Vincent, Jasper, Felix, Hugo, and Sybil. She was the primary babysitter extraordinaire for her local great-grandchildren and lived long enough to meet and love Vincent's partner Jeff and Jasper's partner Krista.
Sue Bell was preceded in death by both of her beloved sons, most closely by her son Ron, "Papa" to his children and grandchildren, who died only 3 weeks before she did. Sue Bell and Ron were the best of friends, long-time roommates, and dreamers of dreams expressed most clearly in their home's outdoor sanctuary that he built and she planted. The greatest mercy in the speed of her descent into dementia was that she was never oriented enough to realize that he had passed ahead of her. Although Ron requested no funeral services be held in his honor, the family welcomes the sharing of his stories as well during this time that we honor Sue Bell.
A visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home & Cemetery, located at 5740 West 19th Street, Lubbock, TX, 79407, on February 6, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
The funeral service is scheduled for February 7, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Smyer School Auditorium, 401 Lincoln St, Smyer, TX, 79367.
A small committal service will follow at Smyer Cemetery.
All are invited to a reception to follow the funeral service at the Smyer Senior Citizens' Center, 224 Lincoln St, Smyer, TX, 79367.
