

He attended Texas Tech University and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. Mel used his degree to begin a highly successful career in Brownfield, TX with the Texas Department of Transportation. After 39 years, he completed his career as the Lubbock District Engineer.
Mel served in the US Army and was an active member of DAV Chapter 44 for 20 years and remained a life member. He was actively involved in his community including being a member of South Plains Lions Club. Mel and Betty have been faithful members of Oakwood Methodist Church since 1972.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Evelyn Barron. His survivors include his beloved wife, Betty; 5 sons, Bill and wife Suzy of Dittmer, MO, Jim and wife Tamera of Lubbock, Ronnie and wife Dorothy of Matador, Kevin of Lubbock, and Brian and wife Robin of Lubbock; grandchildren, Chandyl Pope, Landry Pope, Sabra and husband Brian Myers, Braden Pope, Conner Pope and Jacob Carty; great grandson Berklee Myers.
“Pops” was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed.
