Barbara Hackworth Gunter

Barbara Hackworth Gunter, 86, of Amherst County, Virginia, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2019, surrounded by her family. Born in Lynchburg, Virginia on June 11, 1933, she was the only daughter of Orren Rufus Hackworth, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Lee Hackworth. As a child she loved to participate in school plays, and was proud to be a 1950 graduate of Brookville High School. Barbara met her husband Christopher C. Gunter, III on a blind date in 1948 and they were married two years later. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years in 2003. An infant daughter, Cynthia Ann Gunter and her two brothers, Orren R. Hackworth, Jr. and Kenneth Lee Hackworth, also preceded her in death. Sons, Daniel Lee Gunter, Sr and his wife Debbie, and Rev. Carlton R. Gunter and his wife Sharron survive her. She is also survived by grandchildren Stephanie Bryant, Daniel Gunter, Jr (Suzanne), Jonathan Gunter (Sarah), and David Gunter (Melissa), and great grandchildren, Ashley, Christopher, Robert Manley; Tanner, Caleb, Noah, Aiden, and Addison Gunter; and Carissa, Kathryn, and Katelyn Gunter. In addition to being a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Barbara held an unwavering faith in God. She was a member of Penuel Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Sunday, July 14, 2019 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 2 pm on Monday, July 15, 2019 at Fort Hill Memorial Park in the Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Penuel Baptist Church.
