

Dawn Kincaid Carlton of Lynchburg was called home Tuesday, June 28, 2016. She was the wife of the late James D. “Red” Carlton for 59 years. Born in Lenoir, NC on October 5, 1932 to Irene and Haywood Kincaid, she graduated from Kings Creek High School in 1951. Continuing her education at North Carolina Baptist Hospital School of Nursing, she graduated in 1954, becoming an RN. She practiced in Raleigh, NC for a time after marrying Jim, and moved to Lynchburg, where they raised their 5 children.
Dawn was a member of Peakland Baptist Church since 1955, where she remained active until her health started to decline. She loved gardening, birds, the beach and the mountains. A 25 year volunteer for The American Red Cross, she was also a member of The “OWLS”, you all brought her joy !! Mom loved unconditionally and was a Nurse to all God’s creatures. We will miss your smiling face and gentle nature, but know you have found great joy and peace!!
In addition to her parents and husband, Dawn was preceded in death by her brothers, Gene and Jerry Kincaid and her daughter, Barbara Lynn Carlton.
She is survived by her children, Jo A. Carlton, Captain, USN, Retired and husband John McClurkin, Major, USMC, Retired, of New Bern, NC; James Philip Carlton and wife Maria of Charlottesville, VA; Daphne C. Taylor and husband, Dennis of Lynchburg, VA, and Robert Brian Carlton and wife Donna of Evington, VA; grandchildren, Sam and Neren Carlton, Elizabeth and Christopher Taylor, Mikayla and Noah Carlton and great grandson Hunter Carlton.
The family would like to thank all the folks at Westminster Canterbury for their care and support, Senior Independence Hospice, the “Rummy” girls and a very special thank you to Kristy Noell for her love, caring and support.
A graveside service will be held at Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir, NC on Saturday, July 2, 2016 at 11 am. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Friday, July 1, 2016 at Pendry’s Funeral Home, 522 Wilkesboro Blvd., Lenoir, NC.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, July 10, 2016 at Peakland Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jim Hunter and the Rev. Nathan C. Brooks, III officiating.
