There are several things that I remember about Dot.  The first and foremost was how good a friend she (and Malcolm) were to my mom and dad.  She was really good at getting my mom to go on vacations with them in their later years.  That was a remarkable feat because my mother did not like traveling!  Somehow Dot could plan a trip for the four of them and always include activities that made my mom look forward to going, and talk about with zeal when they returned
I also remember how dedicate Dot was to her church.  She was involved in so many things within the church, and she had a way about her that would make you want to participate with her.  Whether it was Vacation Bible School, Church Day Camp, or a play, she could easily convince you to be a part of it.  I know, I ended up being “convinced” by her many times.  And to her credit, I did always have a good time.
Dot not only looked out for her own family, but she looked out for our family too.  I remember when she worked for the News and Advance, Whenever my picture “made the paper” (for those who don’t know I worked for the Lynchburg Fire Department so there where many times a News and Advance photographer would be on the scene of an incident snapping away with his camera) Dot would always come up with a 8x10 glossy of the photo that was in the paper.  And not only the picture in the paper!  She would also have copies of photos that weren’t used but had me in them.   She knew my mom would love any picture of me so she got everyone she could.
Dot, as with the whole Burgess family, has been the greatest of friends to our family through the years.  From the days of our family being together at Eagle Eyrie, to Church events, Family gatherings, picnics, and whatever else came along, whenever our two families got together Dot always worked hard  to make sure that everyone felt happy and welcomed.  
 And I’m sure now that she has joined Malcolm, Tommy, and Naomi she has already planned some kind of adventure for them.

Wonderful lady. Her youngest, Jeff, and I best friends for almost half a century and she always treated me special. Like family.   Mac, Dixie, Bill, Jeff...my condolences. Your Mom earned a place in heaven and is with your Dad.

Dorothy, or “Meemaw”, as she was always known to us grandkids who idolized her, was a paragon among grandmothers. A radiant example of that perfect “follow a couple rules and go wild otherwise” style of leadership, Meemaw would allow you to follow whatever pursuit in her house seemed to fit you best. You wanted to run through the woods, cross the creek, and sit in the gazebo while listening to the birds? You could do that. Make music on the piano, read books, watch old movies? Of course! Just wanted to eat a whole pack of bacon and a chocolate milkshake in one sitting? Why not? Walking carefully through the attic to get Christmas decorations, riding your bike in the driveway, or pretending to be Moses leading the Israelites while wearing a towel as a robe and toting a wicker laundry basket, all of it had Meemaw’s support. She was loving and wonderful, but even more than that, she was human. Her life touched so many people, even in the smallest way. She kept everything. She talked to everybody. Your friends were her friends, and they’d be offered Fig Newtons just as much as you would be. Sure, you can sum up a life in business achievements, genealogies, even in the preface of cookie recipes. But I don’t think there’s a better way to memorialize Dorothy Burgess than the way she always encouraged: with a broad smile, a warm heart, and a full belly, anything is possible. And you best believe those ideals ring true time and again. I don’t know if they’ve got Internet access in Heaven, but I hope Meemaw knows I always loved her more than words can say, and I’m sure there are many others who felt the exact same way. She was one of the best and only true friends I ever had. From Rebekah Burgess, her granddaughter, with love.
