Elsie Mae Dowdy passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, just four hours shy of her 82nd birthday. Born in Lynchburg on July 18, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Nelson Page Dowdy and Evelyn Dolly Brizendine Dowdy.
Elsie was a 1962 graduate of Rustburg High School where she was an outstanding athlete. She played for the girls’ basketball team and held the state record for most points scored for many years. She also played on the Softball team. She also loved surf fishing in Nags Head, NC. She fished two tournaments a year until her health would no longer also her to do so. She enjoyed her life and did the things she really wanted to do. She was a lifetime member of Fairview Christian Church, where her faith and commitment to her community were evident.
She is survived by her devoted sister, Brenda Nuckles of Lynchburg; her niece, Stacey N. Jones; her nephew, Mitchell W. Nuckles; her great nieces and nephews, Lisa Agee, Lauren Wilson, Jonathon Jones, Sarah Barbour, Erin Nuckles and Landon Nuckles; her great-great nieces and nephews, Makayla Agee, Clayton Wilson, Page Barbour, Madison Barbour and Ross Wilson. She is also survived by special cousins and other extended family and friends.
The family would like to gratefully acknowledge her caregiver, Susan Grasi for the care she provided and her friends Donna and Kathy for their frequent visits.
A memorial service celebrating Elsie’s life will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 27, 2024 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with Pastor Chris Carter officiating.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
