

Evelyn Christine Elder Wood, 87, of Lynchburg, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2014, at The Carrington in Lynchburg. She was the loving and devoted wife of the late Russell “R.E.” Ethridge Wood, Jr. for 48 years.
Born on January 24, 1927 in Charlotte County, she was the daughter of the late Milbert Lee and Katie Myers Elder.
Evelyn graduated from Charlotte County High School and was employed in the office of Craddock & Terry Shoe Company for 24 years.
Evelyn was a member of Beulah Baptist Church for many years and had taught Sunday School in the Children’s Department. Evelyn served with her husband for many years in the Brookville-Timberlake Lion’s Club.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Julia “Judy” Kay Wood Fairburn.
She is survived by her son-in-law, Allen Kirk Fairburn and wife Martha; granddaughters, Jacklyn Kay Fairburn, Allison Marie Berry, and Amy Elizabeth Berry; brother-in-law, William “Bill” Wood and wife Iris “Dickie” and family; nephews, Terry and Rusty Wood and families; and niece Sharon Cyphers and family.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the nurses and staff of The Carrington for their care and support.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at 2 pm at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with the Rev. Dr. J. Monty Fox officiating. Interment will follow at Spring Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 1 until time of service.
