George Anthony Sprouse, 91. On Thursday, October 20, 2011 George Anthony Sprouse was welcomed into the open arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. George was a saintly man who knew that his hope was in the Everlasting. “His Lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things: enter you into the joy of your Lord.’” Matthew 25:23 NKJV
George lived his faith and was an inspiration to all who knew him. A long-standing member of Forest Road United Methodist Church, George served the church in many roles from Deacon to Sunday School teacher. He sang in the choir and welcomed the members and visitors to worship. For his working life, George served his community in many roles as well from a school bus driver to a dairy farmer, but found his true calling as a Master Carpenter. There are many homes and businesses in Lynchburg he worked to build, remodel and restore. In all things, he worked thoughtfully and lovingly to always do his best.
George was born April 28, 1920 to Florine and Herbert Sprouse. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Virginia Hudson Sprouse. He is survived by two sons, Herbert (Brenda) and their children Gregory (Jennifer), Stephen, and Laura Atkins (Daniel) and their children Alana, Anna, Daniel and Dawson, as well as son Bernard “B. J.” (Vickie Whorley), B.J.’s daughter Terry S. Nash and John H. Mays, former daughter-in-law Jane, sister-in-law Agnes Hudson, a special nephew Monty Sprouse, and a special friend Wanda Vukmirovich. The family thanks Edith Barley and Morris Webber and others for so many visits to George at the Oddfellows Home. And we wish to express our gratitude to Dr. David Smith and his entire staff for decades of excellent health care for our beloved George.
A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 25, 2011, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with Bishop Philip Weeks officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends, 6-8 p.m., Monday, October 24, 2011, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
