On March 2, 1927 in Amherst County, Helen Elizabeth Fitzgerald Phillips was born to the late Downy and Littie Bell Fitzgerald. On April 15, 2014, the Lord took her in His arms, gave her wings and added another angel to Heaven to join her devoted husband, the late Percy “Dee” Lee Phillips.
Helen worked as a seamstress at Wilko Uniform Company until its close and going on to retire from Duti-Duds. She was also a charter member of Lakewood Baptist Church. Helen dearly loved her family, gardening, flowers, sewing and baking her famous pound cakes to share. She was strong in her faith and Christian values. Her time on this earth greatly reflected those beliefs.
During her life, she was blessed with five sisters, Rosie Lawson, Judy Lawson (Clarence), the late Lillie Waterman, Naomi Bates, Jane Holland and one brother, Richard Fitzgerald (Margo); two loving children, Janet Long, (Sammy) and Dennis Phillips (Jill Markwood); five grandchildren, Tabitha Parrish, Sammy Parrish (Wendy), David Parrish, Kymberli Edwards (Jerame) and Logan Phillips; eight great-grandchildren, Toney Gunney, Laurel Dempsey, Kimber Courtney, Keegan Parrish, Molly Parrish, Morgun Parrish, Lydia Edwards and Hannah Edwards; one great-great-grandchild, Mason Wagner; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special sister-in-law, Arlene Ewing (Harold).
A funeral service will be conducted, 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends, 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at the residence.
The family would like to send special thanks to the dedicated staff of Gentle Shepherd Hospice in caring for our beloved, sister, mother and grandmother.
