

He was born June 2, 1932 in Kings Creek, North Carolina, the son of the late Ruby Beach Carlton. He attended Mars Hill Junior College, then transferred to North Carolina State University, graduating with a degree in nuclear engineering. He moved to Lynchburg in 1955, where he worked for Babcock and Wilcox, and remained with the company through all its acquisitions, retiring in 1997 after 42 years with the company. During this time he assisted in work on the NS Savannah, the first American nuclear-powered cargo ship. He was a member of Peakland Baptist Church in Lynchburg since shortly after its founding.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dawn Kincaid Carlton, his children, Jo A. Carlton, Captain, USN, Retired and husband John McClurkin, Major, USMC, Retired, of New Bern, NC; James Philip Carlton and wife Maria of Charlottesville, VA; Daphne C. Taylor and husband Dennis of Lynchburg, and Robert Brian Carlton and wife Donna of Evington, VA; one sister, Julia Carlton of Lenoir, NC; six grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Barbara Lynn Carlton and infant twin brother Robert Dwain Beach.
A graveside service was conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 28, 2013 at Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir, NC.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 3, 2013 at Peakland Baptist Church, 4018 Peakland Place, Lynchburg.
