Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of the late George H. Medley and Elizabeth Anne Riggs Medley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jenny Lynne West, and his second wife, Glenda Hudac Medley.
James is survived by his son, James L. Medley, Jr. (Sandra); two daughters, Kimberley Anne Medley and Jennifer Lynne Medley; and a beloved cousin with whom he shared a close bond, Rita Selibovsky.
James retired from Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Publishing House, where he enjoyed a successful career as both a sales representative and editor. His professional life reflected his love of learning and communication, but it was his vibrant personality and zest for life that truly defined him.
A passionate traveler, James embraced every opportunity to see the world. His journeys took him across continents, highlighted by a memorable month-long cruise around the globe—an experience he often spoke of with great joy. He found deep fulfillment in exploring new places, meeting new people, and immersing himself in different cultures.
Equally, James had a gift for socializing and brought warmth and energy wherever he went. He cherished time spent with friends, whether at lively gatherings or simple get-togethers, and was known for his engaging stories and easy laughter. He also enjoyed watching hockey, cooking meals to share with others, and spending quiet moments reading. His love for animals was evident throughout his life and brought him great comfort and companionship.
A private inurnment will be scheduled at his home church, St. John’s Episcopal Church in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York.
In lieu of flowers, and in honor of his love for animals, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Lynchburg Humane Society or the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).
James will be remembered as a man who truly lived life to the fullest—curious about the world, devoted to connection, and happiest in the company of others.
