

James was born on August 17, 1941, in Lynchburg, the son of the late Gertrude and Wals Riley. James retired as a machinist with the Lynchburg Foundry after 24 years of service. He was a lifetime farmer on Rock Hill Farm raising beef cattle. He was a former member of Campbell County Rescue Squad, and Lyn-Dan Heights Fire Department. James was an active member of the Lyn-Dan Heights Ruritan Club for 47 years with perfect attendance. He served on the board of the Campbell County Farm Bureau since 1989 and as President since 2002. He was a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church.
Along with his wife Muriel, James is survived by his two daughters: Lynn Saunders, and her husband Hubert (Junior), and Deanna Storey, and her husband Robert ( Bobby); and four grandchildren: Amanda Lovelace, and her husband Tyler, Rachel Saunders, Rebecca Saunders, and Adam Storey.
A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, September 5, 2010 at 2:00 pm at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with Pastor Edward L. Pope and Rev. Earnest G. Carey, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 4, 2010 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and other times at the home of Lynn Saunders.
