

Born in Lynchburg, May 11, 1916, he was the son of the late William Edward Smith and Jeanette Marsh Smith. James was a US Army veteran having served in the Pacific during WWII and was a retired special agent with the F.B.I. after 35 years of service. James was active in the Boy Scouts of America for over 50 years, serving in many capacities, the last being chairperson, Eagle Board of Review for over 20 years. He received the silver Beaver award for his dedicated service to the Boy Scouts program. He was an active member of Woodlake United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sons, James C. Smith, Jr. and wife Connie and Bruce E. Smith all of Midlothian and Paul A. Smith and wife Lauren of Peachtree Corners, GA; five grandchildren, Christopher, Zachary, Kendall, Tyler and Julia and one great grandchild, Jaden.
A service celebrating his life will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Woodlake United Methodist Church with a reception to be held afterwards. Graveside services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. at Fort Hill Memorial Park, Lynchburg with military honors by the American Legion Post 16.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorial contributions be made to Woodlake United Methodist Church, 15640 Hampton Park Dr., Chesterfield, VA 23832.
