Born in Lynchburg, March 4, 1938, he was the son of the late Thomas Underwood Gilbert and Carrie Trent Gilbert Carroll. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Jesse Mearl Gilbert, Jr. and Sgt. Thomas Randall Gilbert; four brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Dolly Lindsey Gilbert, four daughters, Cindy Currin (Don), Tammy Blizzard (Steven), Kelly Agee (Marty) and Lisa Mayberry; one son, Todd Vaughan (Vicky); 13 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Jesse was a retired building contractor and was a member of Jordan Baptist Church. He loved the outdoors including hunting, fishing and camping. He was a dynamic husband and father and he made an impression on everyone he met.
Dr. Melvin Campbell will officiate a private service at the Gilbert Family Cemetery.
