Mary Mitchell Thurman

Mary Mitchell Burgess Thurman, 84, of Evington, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at the Virginia Baptist Hospital. Twice married, she was the widow of Willie Ben Burgess and the widow of George Edward Thurman.

Born in Campbell Co., she was the daughter of the late John Robert Mitchell and the late Emma Lindsay Mitchell. In addition to her parents and her husbands, she was preceded in death by one son, Bennie Burgess; one daughter, Faye Burgess and eight brothers and three sisters.

Mary was blessed with many friends and a family that loved her.

She is survived by one son, Buddy W. Burgess and his wife, Sandra, of Salem; three grandchildren, Dwayne Burgess of Salem, Renee’ B. Butterworth and her husband, Robert, of Catawba and Bambi Walser and her husband, Sam, of Richmond; two great grandchildren, Josh Burgess and Ryan Dowe; a daughter-in-law, Linda Burgess of Salem; a very special niece, Sally East of Evington and special friends, Roy East and family, Jeannie East and Tammy Hunt.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, at the Thurman Family Cemetery in Gladys by The Reverend Jack Hamilton.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
